Brass is a beautiful and durable alloy, but it naturally oxidizes over time when exposed to air and moisture. To ensure your brass house numbers retain their shine and continue to look their best, regular care and cleaning are essential. However, you may decide to allow your brass house numbers to build up a natural patina over time. Your order will be delivered with full care instructions to follow to keep your number bright if you would like to avoid patina, as well as all fixing parts and installation instructions.
If you would prefer a low maintenance material then our range of stainless steel numbers require very little care to keep the silver colour bright.
Please contact us about custom orders in this beautiful brass material.
Here are some simple steps to help maintain the finish of brass house numbers, with a more detailed care sheet shipped with your order:
1. Regular Cleaning
- Frequency: Clean your brass house numbers every 1-3 months, depending on your local climatic conditions and exposure to elements. For example, more frequent cleaning will be needed if you live on the coast.
- Cleaning Solution: Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a gentle cleaning solution made from warm water and mild dish soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the brass surface.
- Procedure: Dampen the cloth with the cleaning solution, gently wipe the surface in the direction of the grained finish, and then dry with a clean, dry cloth to avoid water spots.
2. Remove Tarnish Promptly
- Brass naturally tarnishes over time, forming a patina (a darker, oxidized surface). If you prefer to maintain the shiny finish, use a brass polish such as Brasso, which is readily available from many outlets. Apply with a soft cloth, polish in line with the linear finish on the surface of your house number, then buff with a clean, dry cloth.
3. Avoid Abrasive Materials
- Avoid using rough sponges, scouring pads, or steel wool when cleaning your brass house numbers. These materials will scratch the surface and lead to further oxidation.
- Stick to soft cloths or microfiber towels for cleaning and polishing.
4. Protect the Surface
- Regular polishing: This will protect the finished surface and keep it bright (see Tarnish, above).
- Waxing Option: Some people prefer to apply a thin layer of car wax or lanolin, which creates a protective barrier against the elements.
- If using Lanolin: Apply the cream evenly across the metal parts you wish to protect. Allow the lanolin cream to cure completely, which may take up to a week. Regularly reapply the lanolin cream to maintain the protective barrier, especially in high-moisture environments or areas exposed to salt.
